They are very useful as napkins after you have finished your morning oatmeal. Just chew along the edge of a page and the oatmeal will come off, eventually. Sometimes you have to finish the job by wiping your beak on your person's sleeve. Newspapers are also nice to chew just for fun. I have spent many a happy hour shredding the newspapers that line the bottom of my cage. And last but not least, about the most important use of a newspaper is to catch your droppings that fall to the bottom of your cage. I have heard of people using electronic newspapers but I can't understand how that would work. How would you chew an electronic newspaper? Could you poop on one? So confusing! Anyhow, I find the paper newspapers that arrive at our house very useful. Back and forth, back and forth, she flies, bringing dried grasses which she carefully arranges and forms into a nest shape, then flies off to search for more materials.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJVSpVsl59R7n2c_TbQFRDqNiqrMwBIPRdOayIyVCOeQyQqMHjb5EgS4nWRhgW4EyBwLjvduD1hA_Ma4QOuH0ix4H_IWRO-9gYjaQrRrvtE_qwY_YUqCJoKKAxJ2JdO4-FgReoUYYeSnQ6PlD8EWW3TQsXRdQmX8wvDoO5YPZs1VS6H5m2VAvog27G/s4032/nest%20robin.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJVSpVsl59R7n2c_TbQFRDqNiqrMwBIPRdOayIyVCOeQyQqMHjb5EgS4nWRhgW4EyBwLjvduD1hA_Ma4QOuH0ix4H_IWRO-9gYjaQrRrvtE_qwY_YUqCJoKKAxJ2JdO4-FgReoUYYeSnQ6PlD8EWW3TQsXRdQmX8wvDoO5YPZs1VS6H5m2VAvog27G/s320/nest%20robin.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><p>Just watching her do all that work is tiring. And why bother, I wonder, when she could just lay her eggs in her extra food dish. I’ve done that several times myself. It’s very convenient and much easier than doing all that nest building. On the other hand, when I look back on it, I have to admit that none of my eggs have ever hatched. Hmmmmmm. . . . . maybe that robin’s on to something.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2x_u0rVfRDKJUTQ98MWRjF9bNBfMPJ756HFPvl2Phq9KETNKLk1IRWvXcmOoMKXN7h9Z9bvuLQLIC5p9CfA9dW0qsI8SVfArwzsZknR1WtPHLPcU1PmuPOMkcoUq96hcTdcODBMhjt_d7_BMXdwHv6Ljs1vrwoUf_gKIGXzyzDnNa_Q7PD-pfEVf5/s4000/nest%20shadow.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="3000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2x_u0rVfRDKJUTQ98MWRjF9bNBfMPJ756HFPvl2Phq9KETNKLk1IRWvXcmOoMKXN7h9Z9bvuLQLIC5p9CfA9dW0qsI8SVfArwzsZknR1WtPHLPcU1PmuPOMkcoUq96hcTdcODBMhjt_d7_BMXdwHv6Ljs1vrwoUf_gKIGXzyzDnNa_Q7PD-pfEVf5/s320/nest%20shadow.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Shadowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07507668867178937021noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3787204336037070894.post-85633469172565543952023-04-23T12:51:00.000-04:002023-04-23T12:51:13.331-04:00Parrot Poetry<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN0vkkYWM_cUpZtntYrqlLktzLClpmiX15mR8p9EDLVCFmWYeM0jeuMjgDdc6IxRN9B3oRQBqjv_ID5yxL5KYI3ZlypktV_7EKvbP6Dl-I7IwZu_ZzrTHcWeP4vKJE99GGh2PW_qZM_lWQ9IivW097ijbDJCuPSlYB9H4CtzuS2p8q5FsGp-oYJu2H/s3226/shadow%20rain%20perch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3226" data-original-width="2333" height="395" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN0vkkYWM_cUpZtntYrqlLktzLClpmiX15mR8p9EDLVCFmWYeM0jeuMjgDdc6IxRN9B3oRQBqjv_ID5yxL5KYI3ZlypktV_7EKvbP6Dl-I7IwZu_ZzrTHcWeP4vKJE99GGh2PW_qZM_lWQ9IivW097ijbDJCuPSlYB9H4CtzuS2p8q5FsGp-oYJu2H/w285-h395/shadow%20rain%20perch.jpg" width="285" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p></p><h3 style="text-align: center;">Spring Rain</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-size: medium;">by Shadow</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Outside the rain is coming down,</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Splish-splashing as it hits the ground.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Inside, where I am warm and dry,</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-size: medium;">From my perch I watch the drops fly by.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The rainfall turns the whole world green.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The prettiest color I’ve ever seen!</span></div><div><br /></div></div><p><br /></p>Shadowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07507668867178937021noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3787204336037070894.post-51901482772474357662023-04-14T06:32:00.001-04:002023-04-14T06:32:34.444-04:00Hatch Day<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">Tomorrow is my hatch day. </span></p><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsEOrgXAr8nEBzO-P0wkVZc95xp5r3szshNwyCJqgWE3ugzj-ZT_cfBH66xf4kc_j42RIcYrgVVKZLl1Ccqap9BhWfnoiLDoAQCmlPtpaLNVzprOSdjoz5o31bh-9XbqmGpVxpAoDmW1nL_H8tFlS5dVO5_CnLYEl3C-8BfLr_WTeg8JOGMwtBtcAp/s3228/Shadow%20pose.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3228" data-original-width="2101" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsEOrgXAr8nEBzO-P0wkVZc95xp5r3szshNwyCJqgWE3ugzj-ZT_cfBH66xf4kc_j42RIcYrgVVKZLl1Ccqap9BhWfnoiLDoAQCmlPtpaLNVzprOSdjoz5o31bh-9XbqmGpVxpAoDmW1nL_H8tFlS5dVO5_CnLYEl3C-8BfLr_WTeg8JOGMwtBtcAp/s320/Shadow%20pose.jpg" width="208" /></a><br /> <p></p><p>It was 26 years ago that I pecked my way out of my egg. And in those 26 years I’ve done so many interesting things. I hatched in 1 state, have lived in 2 others as well as the District of Colombia, and have traveled through many other states as well. I have made many acquaintances and several dear friends, both human and avian (but not canine or feline!). I have sampled and enjoyed many kinds of food, though of course I have my favorites – walnuts and seed treats. I have fended off all kinds of predators – dog, cats, horses, tall ladders, trucks, scissors, random passersby – to name just a few of the fearsome enemies I have confronted. I have also enjoyed the cultured life, having chewed my way through a variety of books and newspapers and enjoyed many TV shows and movies in the company of my people. All in all, I can say that I have enjoyed an interesting and varied life and I look forward to much more. </p><p>I plan to spend my hatch day quietly in the company of my people and hope they will indulge me with lots of seed treats. Aside from when we’re flying, which is just a small percentage of the time, perches are where we take our place in the world. The best perch, in my opinion, is on top of your person’s head. One of my people is quite tall, and from the top of his head I get a good view of everything and can keep an eye out for predators. Other parts of your person’s body also make good perches. A shoulder is good for taking trips around the house. A knee makes a nice perch, too.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmYP1hO9MnWdlQjcklc-AAGrcXTzYyVb0nuMwjYgtv3Fvf4QUrmfK4NrKwIK_wOEBnNAx9XCYRzN0Cauxw2EEmfrTXAvf48qIzN2Jd4hqs3tEUSoqBfEamaK2Lj7OXfTnLwCryrOgEtWDiDZ4hSWC6Uv4T4SlYFwDL_CvMrf4m4kJa76ginutbwMzm/s2016/Shadow%20knee.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2016" data-original-width="1512" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmYP1hO9MnWdlQjcklc-AAGrcXTzYyVb0nuMwjYgtv3Fvf4QUrmfK4NrKwIK_wOEBnNAx9XCYRzN0Cauxw2EEmfrTXAvf48qIzN2Jd4hqs3tEUSoqBfEamaK2Lj7OXfTnLwCryrOgEtWDiDZ4hSWC6Uv4T4SlYFwDL_CvMrf4m4kJa76ginutbwMzm/s320/Shadow%20knee.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><p>A foot is good for getting a different view on things.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmsAtxNqQK24veV90Vys2hfjMy2YnoApLleB3mE-IFbb38EnycyY_f4fKDVxAKcLyWUMrzUCdizPSQLLsAl2KufpPofbyMEe7ekPcMhrlOwREB9fxVLW5WL7SSVFMPKH7fDpZTRG2xkTsyQOY5ZUya7g2f-XfuMWoy0LjtuPQ1ZbWB5Cx6eUQTrEgY/s4032/shadow%20foot.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmsAtxNqQK24veV90Vys2hfjMy2YnoApLleB3mE-IFbb38EnycyY_f4fKDVxAKcLyWUMrzUCdizPSQLLsAl2KufpPofbyMEe7ekPcMhrlOwREB9fxVLW5WL7SSVFMPKH7fDpZTRG2xkTsyQOY5ZUya7g2f-XfuMWoy0LjtuPQ1ZbWB5Cx6eUQTrEgY/s320/shadow%20foot.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><p>A laundry rack makes a great perch. In that time, I’ve had many experiences. I’ve lived in several places and seen many things. People and birds I’ve been close to have come and gone. Now that I have reached my golden years, I have many memories to look back on and many changes to contemplate. My feathers may not have the sheen they once did, I may not be able to fly as well as I did in my youth, but of one thing I am still certain – the importance of snuggling close to the ones you love.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi44aigPFwn3alj1gg2q716oCed4_NBEsZH2cyHWe0_2ajqc0Ac4dFyPOnAjpG-t__0q1FtLp340C9FBTedZ9pDAFuDXHxFwQPYgU6owPZHbBKnRQYr5FBwHGj2E7u7fBUuhqzzA6bVjSrQa8_WI03yPvojAet5zLY7GdL_ZtQOxNgfC-R-nIESZAOr/s4032/shadow%20hand%20snuggle.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="332" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi44aigPFwn3alj1gg2q716oCed4_NBEsZH2cyHWe0_2ajqc0Ac4dFyPOnAjpG-t__0q1FtLp340C9FBTedZ9pDAFuDXHxFwQPYgU6owPZHbBKnRQYr5FBwHGj2E7u7fBUuhqzzA6bVjSrQa8_WI03yPvojAet5zLY7GdL_ZtQOxNgfC-R-nIESZAOr/w442-h332/shadow%20hand%20snuggle.JPG" width="442" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Shadowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07507668867178937021noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3787204336037070894.post-71729680024896614452023-02-25T14:47:00.003-05:002023-02-25T15:30:41.710-05:00Breakfast<h1 style="text-align: left;"><br /></h1><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYNl_lP_GcijWrIeEPq9fvgn0e6fJ-TKlnaH1BSHUVyel3j8MUzys4pgritUY3kXniFRdmOtuw60vZYFYuB2h2wQsKFHpM1Zl4-ZaZMwWRXrFCqYeR_uP34f9ORnCG3v9N25ARHZetCR0Dn54iio4V4czJR3GplIVXPo_2cFWzlQMOeH5HLZYfBcwc/s3534/shadow%20oatmeal%202.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3534" data-original-width="2644" height="386" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYNl_lP_GcijWrIeEPq9fvgn0e6fJ-TKlnaH1BSHUVyel3j8MUzys4pgritUY3kXniFRdmOtuw60vZYFYuB2h2wQsKFHpM1Zl4-ZaZMwWRXrFCqYeR_uP34f9ORnCG3v9N25ARHZetCR0Dn54iio4V4czJR3GplIVXPo_2cFWzlQMOeH5HLZYfBcwc/w288-h386/shadow%20oatmeal%202.jpg" width="288" /></a></div><br /><p>There’s nothing like a bowl of warm oatmeal for breakfast on a chilly winter morning, and a helpful hand to lift the spoon up to your beak!</p>Shadowhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07507668867178937021noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3787204336037070894.post-76222839322217983312018-12-21T08:34:00.000-05:002018-12-21T08:34:19.425-05:00Soup!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Don’t you just love soup? There’s nothing like a hot bowl of soup on a cold winter’s day, especially when you share it with your person. I like all kinds of soup, but my favorite kinds are the ones that have little seeds floating around in them. My person says they’re caraway seeds or fennel seeds. I don’t care what she calls them, as long as they’re seeds! The other good thing about soup is you can dunk bread in it. That’s so much fun. If you are a parrot, you’ll know what I’m talking about. </div>

Look at what I saw outside my window the other day! Turkeys are nice birds, but I sure am glad I'm not a turkey, especially at this time of year. I mean, aside from the fact that I wouldn't want to end up on someone's Thanksgiving dinner table, I just don't see the point of all that wandering around in the snow scavenging for food. We pet parrots are sensible enough to stay inside where it's warm and the food dish is full. </div>

The main reason is that the kitchen is where the food is kept and prepared, so it's very important to train your person to let you spend time there. The first thing you should do when you enter the kitchen is to check out the counter because that's where you're sure to find lots of unnoticed crumbs and other tiny bits of food, and possibly even a few stray seeds. I spend time grazing on the kitchen counter whenever I get a chance. My efforts are always rewarded.<br />

So it's very important to train your person to provide you with frequent bathing opportunities, whether it's a shower under spray bottle or a chance to splash around in a dish. In my case, the best chance for bathing comes every evening. One of my people washes the dishes every night after dinner, and it's my job to help him out by sitting on his shoulder while he washes. If I happen to be in the mood for a bath at this time, which I usually am because, I mean, what parrot can resist the sound of running water, all I have to do is squawk and chirp and flap my wings, and my person gets the message that it's bath time. He knows to set a pan of water on the counter and let me jump in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg70RDbmatZdtrqUDaBbTozoEBDOcnWZUNazqGo3zTf9qwIUZa-Y1QCUxL2XAOKB7b2RjlIMEBijHfrudSPIIycHLgY-cE7TX-WlcjnWcOEAjEzGgTV5rJtqXhZb2RuEsm-ImRLQib9eb8/s1600/shadow+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1196" data-original-width="1600" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg70RDbmatZdtrqUDaBbTozoEBDOcnWZUNazqGo3zTf9qwIUZa-Y1QCUxL2XAOKB7b2RjlIMEBijHfrudSPIIycHLgY-cE7TX-WlcjnWcOEAjEzGgTV5rJtqXhZb2RuEsm-ImRLQib9eb8/s320/shadow+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I find that frying pans and cookie sheets make excellent bath tubs because they give me plenty of room to spread my wings, but I'm not above bathing in a saucepan or even a water glass if that's all that is available.<br />

Twenty-one years ago today I hatched out my egg, and I've been squawking ever since! Here's photo of me enjoying a special hatch day lunch. Yum! I love cornbread.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ecKxSQ28gHvM-yVk1mWyzBbuN1w8yL_StXytVSNvqib_UDgVL5jiI7rPYFFzjsd59W92q89XAoiC3Twp7FQbAwz_wJ8mnoIM35S9weZyYEX7C9c0y6CXkkXdZnlkv7r0tdXTtTJShYY/s1600/P1030469.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5ecKxSQ28gHvM-yVk1mWyzBbuN1w8yL_StXytVSNvqib_UDgVL5jiI7rPYFFzjsd59W92q89XAoiC3Twp7FQbAwz_wJ8mnoIM35S9weZyYEX7C9c0y6CXkkXdZnlkv7r0tdXTtTJShYY/s320/P1030469.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The best perch to watch TV from is the top of your person's head. Actually, it's a good perch for many things -- watching out for predators, keeping an eye on your other person while she's in the kitchen in case she brings out the seed bucket, checking out visitors you haven't met before, and just generally watching what's going on around you. So it's a good idea to train your person or people to get used to you sitting on their heads. One of my people is quite tall so his head makes a very good perch. I usually sit there when we're watching TV. I just love the TV. It makes all kinds of interesting sounds - especially music. Whenever the theme song of a TV show comes on, I squawk and chirp and whoop right along with it. It's so much fun! I recognize the theme songs of all the TV shows we regularly watch. We parrots have a great appreciation for music.<br />

For example, if you happen to come across a bowl of tangerines on the table, you should stand and stare at them. If that doesn't get your person's attention, then touch a tangerine with your beak. If that doesn't do the trick, then just use your beak to start peeling the tangerine yourself. That way your person will surely understand that it is time to peel the tangerine for you and offer you as many slices as you like.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC8ISJExaOjplbzTnPKKC5YMXEwgEaxTTli7ALmvUSW81jbsJdVrc41nEu0COgtT5_pUPJ_B5HsJJ50f6VskEamE5AtGHvQsT15sXILK7wvloZJFxg9qFKmAxft_aLViJgthe0ZorIHuI/s1600/P1030462.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC8ISJExaOjplbzTnPKKC5YMXEwgEaxTTli7ALmvUSW81jbsJdVrc41nEu0COgtT5_pUPJ_B5HsJJ50f6VskEamE5AtGHvQsT15sXILK7wvloZJFxg9qFKmAxft_aLViJgthe0ZorIHuI/s320/P1030462.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
As every pet parrot knows, the best place to eat a tangerine slice is on you person's shoulder.<br />

<br />
Don't you just love oatmeal? It's my favorite breakfast, especially since my people serve it with sunflower seeds and nuts. Sometimes they add berries, which are also very tasty. As you can see, I have trained my person to share his breakfast with me. Some people are easier to train than others, but you've got to keep working at it. I find that a few ear tugs often help my people understand how I want them to behave, and if that doesn't work, a loud squawk or two usually does the trick. Not always, though, alas. I'm having a bit of trouble with my other person. I have tried to train her to share lunch with me but she usually locks me in my cage instead.<br />
